Specialist contractors in the Construction Industry are experiencing improvements in trade according to the State of Trade Survey by the National Specialist Contractors Council (NSCC). 44% of respondents reported an increase in enquiries in the first quarter of 2012 and 37% an increase in orders which is the highest rate of improvement that has been seen for three years.

Federation of Master Builders urges government to introduce reforms to stimulate the construction sector to get growth back in the economy.

Brian Berry, FMB chief executive, said: "The Government will find it very difficult to get sustained growth in the economy while the construction industry remains depressed."

"Construction is essential to the wellbeing of the wider economy because of the variety and quantity of jobs it creates from apprentice bricklayers to world-leading architects."

Building work in the Northern region is on the rise according to the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF).

The latest figures show sales of building materials in the Northern region rose by 1.9 per cent for the three months from December to February, compared with the previous period.

The Northern region outperformed the BMF's national sales index, which shown a 3.7 per cent drop between last two quarters.

Trades Union Congress revealed that the number of people working in the construction industry has shrunk by 12% since 2007 with 281,000 jobs have been lost in the construction industry over the past five years. However there was a slight increase in 2011 with 17,000 jobs added in the building sector. The TUC urges the government to make investment in jobs its top priority by introducing a guarantee of a paid job or training for any young person out of work for six months or more.

Activity in the UK Construction Industry unexpectedly accelerated in March as orders rose at the fastest rate in four years.

Building companies feel more optimistic about the outlook being the sign that Britain's economy is on track for recovery. The surprise jump in the Markit/CIPS construction Purchasing Managers' Index to 56.7 from February's 54.3, hitting its highest level in 21 months, indicates that the need for more stimulus from the Bank of England is fading.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have published a leaflet explaining how subcontractors that are registered as limited companies should reclaim any deductions they have had taken from their payments under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

A copy of the leaflet will also be sent out to limited company subcontractors that are contacted by HMRC in regarding their claim for repayment of deductions through the P35 process.

Office of National Statistics estimates that the total volume of all new construction orders in the fourth quarter of 2011 fell slightly by 2.5 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2011.

Infrastructure construction saw growth of 41.6 per cent, whilst new public housing decreased by 26.6 per cent compare with the third quarter.

The total volume of all new construction orders in 2011 was 14.1 per cent lower than 2010, and at its lowest since 1980, with the largest decrease being in other public new work (34.7 per cent) and public new housing (28.3 per cent).
