Signs of a recovery in private sector work may ease the pain of a double-dip recession in the construction industry in the wake of severe government spending cuts at the end of 2010 according to Reuters.

"The underlying trend should brighten a little bit (in the second half)," Allan Wilen, economics director at construction industry analyst Glenigan, told Reuters.

Construction and property companies accounted for 21% of all companies falling into administration in 2010, according to research by the business advisory firm Deloitte.

Construction was hardest hit sector in the economic downturn during the year, with a 453 construction and property companies went into administration, however, the number was down 34% from 2009 when 683 companies in the Construction Industry went into administration.

Activity in the UK construction industry picked up faster than expected in May, helped by a strong rise in new orders, according to survey of purchasing managers by CIPS/Markit .

The CIPS/Markit headline construction purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to 54.0 in May from 53.3 in April. Economists had forecast a modest pick-up to 53.6.

The survey said that employment in the construction sector increased for the first time since June 2010 and that companies were their most optimistic in a year about future activity.

An increase in the underlying value of construction projects started over March and April took the index to levels not seen since July. However, weakness across the construction industry, partually caused by reduced government spending and a faltering housing market, meant that new work was still significantly below last year, according to James Abraham, Economist at Glenigan.

But despite an improvement over March and April on the low value of new work over the winter, the building industry recovery is still dwarfed by the rapid gains made last spring.

The Prime Minister adopted the building industry’s campaign slogan "Get Britain Building" when he expressed concern about the latest output figures, which showed the overall economy grew by just 0.5% during the first quarter of 2011.

Form P35 for the year 2010-2011 is due for completion on or before 19 May 2011. If the return is submitted late you may receive a penalty. Although it is not a legal requirement to submit Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) monthly returns online, in all but a very few exceptional circumstances it is mandatory to file the form P35 electronically. Failure to do so may also incur a penalty.
