The UK building industry continued to grow in March 2011, but raw materials prices hit a 31-month high, according to recent research. Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for the building sector revealed that rising costs were driven by fuel, oil and steel.

Industry activity registered a level of 56.4 for March, well above the expected 54.9. A level above 50 indicates expansion.

The construction industry is set to benefit from proposed new rules designed to encourage a return to the buy-to-let market and expand the rental housing market.

Chris Ross, a solicitor in the conveyancing team at regional legal firm BHP Law, says the opportunities could prompt a major expansion of the housing market and, in turn, provide fresh impetus for the construction industry.

The tax cuts relate to stamp duty, which has been blamed for impeding investment as it pushed up the cost of buying or building large portfolios.

The implementation of new international accounting standards could reduce the book value of England's housing associations by over £1bn and cost £150m in red tape – prompting fears that plans for thousands of new affordable homes will now be axed to cover the costs of the new system, the National Housing Federation has warned.

The Accounting Standards Board announced last year that associations must file accounts according to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by 2015.
